Johannesburg - National record holder Sunette Viljoen finished third in the women's javelin throw at the Diamond League athletics meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday evening.

Viljoen, the only South African competing at the meeting, heaved a best effort of 64.08m in the fifth round.

Olympic gold medallist Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic won with a best throw of 67.19m and Russian Mariya Abakumova took second place.

The German pairing of Christina Obergfoll and Linda Stahl, the Olympic silver and bronze medallists, were fourth and sixth respectively.

Viljoen earlier this month missed out on a medal at the Olympic Games in London when she finished fourth in the final.
