Van Niekerk had a successful operation on medial and lateral tears of the meniscus in his right knee, as well as his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), at Steadman Clinic in Colorado on Tuesday.
"We are pleased to have received positive news from the doctor, who says the operation went well," said Peet van Zyl of In-Site Athlete Management.
"Wayde had his first rehab session on Wednesday and it went well."
It was revealed on Tuesday that the 400m world record holder would be out of action for at least six months and would miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in Australia due to the injury.
