Semenya, Van Niekerk in SA African Champs team

Cape Town - Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya will spearhead one of the largest teams ever to represent South Africa at the 20th CAA African Senior Championships in Durban, South Africa from June 22-26.

A total of 96 athletes made of 52 men and 44 women will be led by team management of 16 members.

The Championships will give ASA the opportunity to see their elite athletes taking their performance to a higher level, while also offering the other fringe athletes a chance to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5-21, 2016, where the Track & Field programme will be held from August 12-21.

In welcoming the release of the final team, Aleck Skhosana, president of ASA said ASA as the host of the Championships, ASA must ensure it entered the best possible team to compete with the best of the continent.

“It’s a massive opportunity for us to showcase the various talents of our athletes to the African continent. With the slogan of this Championships being ‘I am an African’, the size and quality of this team will demonstrate to the continent that South Africa is truly part of Africa,” said Skhosana.

ASA will propose a final team for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to SASCOC after the CAA Senior Championships on the June 29, 2016.

The final team will be announced soon afterwards by SASCOC according to SASCOC selection principles.
