Cape Town - An accomplished Cape Town runner was killed in a hit and run in Claremont on Tuesday morning.

Nezaam Isaacs, 42, was killed while jogging on Belvedere Road.

Senior Cape Town traffic officer Richard Coleman said the vehicle involved was not found at the scene when officials arrived.

Farouk Meyer, Athletic Development Commissioner of the Itheko Sport Athletic Club, of which Isaacs was a member, said it was understood that during the fast, Isaacs had started running earlier than usual to allow him time to have breakfast before sunrise.

An app record of his last trip indicates he had been running for 14 minutes 18 seconds, covering a distance of 2.2km on Imam Haron Road from Lansdowne to Claremont. He was killed shortly after turning into Belvedere Road.

Meyer said a 110kg Isaacs started running a decade ago to improve his health.

“He was one of our success stories - he changed his life,” Meyer told News24 while waiting for Isaacs’ body to arrive at the Salt River mortuary.

“He was always friendly, encouraging other runners by sharing his story.”

Isaacs had taken part in 17 ultra runs since 2012.

His last recorded run according to Ultra Marathon Statistics was in April when he took part in the Two Oceans Marathon.

Isaacs is survived by his mother, a wife and a daughter.

He is expected to be buried in accordance with Muslim rites later on Tuesday.

Belvedere Road was closed between Rembrandt Road and Imam Harmon Road as police investigated the scene. It was reopened to traffic at 09:00.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said a culpable homicide case is under investigation.

No arrests have been made.
