SA’s first music race launched

Cape Town - Hyundai South Africa has launched Rock the Run, South Africa’s first 10km and 21.1km running event that uniquely combines running with live music performances en-route, culminating in a massive after-party concert - to take place on Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Run, sing, and dance to the beat with more than 11 000 expected athletes, families and friends as the Sandton City CBD provides a scenic race course with three music stages positioned at key points on the route.

The race begins at Mushroom Farm Park, home of the landmark Hyundai balloon where participants will experience a medium to challenging route of incline hills and slopes in true metropolitan style through the manicured streets of Gauteng’s business capital. Every runner who crosses the finish line will receive a unique Rock the Run medal and gain access to the after party concert in Mushroom Farm Park included in their entry fee.

MiCasa, Freshly Ground, Brent Harris and the Jam, the Graeme Watkins Project, popular DJ’s as well as sports presenters John Walland and Sasha Martinengo, are just a few of the names to perform on the day. Hyundai Rock the Run looks forward to formally announcing the full list of performers in the next couple of weeks.

All runners who complete the race will automatically be entered into a random draw, based on their race number, and will stand a chance to walk away with a brand new Hyundai i20 valued at R158 900. There will also be a number of other great prizes on offer during the day for race participants. For the more serious club runners and fitness fanatics, the male and female winners of the 21.1km race will each win R50 000, whilst the male and female winners of the 10km race will each win R10 000.

Hyundai Marketing Manager, François Marais adds, “We are extremely excited to introduce such a fun and unique event to South Africa. The cleverly devised combination of sport, entertainment and good quality family-fun is just another way we can actively engage with our vibrant nation.

“Hyundai has always aligned with sport - positioning our popular brand in the same light as the tangible and intangible qualities that sport represents; from commitment to excellence and discipline. What better way to create unity among our nation than by connecting entertainment with sport, and providing a little something for everyone through Rock the Run!” quips Marais.

The brainchild of Hyundai South Africa, Frontiers Sport and Entertainment and the Times Media Group, Rock the Run will not only provide families and athletes with a full day of entertainment, but will also support amazing initiatives such as The Starfish Foundation and The Sports Trust by donating a percentage of proceeds from every single entry towards their respective causes. Hyundai is leading the way along with tongue-in-cheek restaurant brand Nando’s, and Scheckter’s Organic Energy Drink.

Sandton’s Mushroom Farm Park will accommodate all participants and spectators with live entertainment combined with food stalls, hot-air balloon rides, a car exhibition, a kiddies fun-corner with stilt walkers, clowns and performers as well as a beer and VIP tent. Parking will be available throughout the CBD at locations including Gautrain and Sandton City shopping centre. Road closures and logistical information can be obtained from daily tweets, Facebook posts and the website at www.rocktherun.co.za.

To register for Rock the Run simply visit www.rocktherun.co.za. Deadline for race entries is February 26, 2014. Entries cost R250 for the 21.1km and R220 for the 10km distance.

For all spectators who do not wish to participate in the running event and would rather enjoy a day of fun in the sun, the entrance fee is R100. Children under the age of 13 will be allowed free access as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult.
