Evans to make ASA comeback?

Johannesburg - Former Athletics SA (ASA) president James Evans could make a comeback at the organisation's special general meeting on May 24 after he was nominated for five positions on the executive board.

ASA's ad hoc committee on Friday released the names of the nominees and Evans received nominations: for president, vice-president, road running chairman, track and field chairman, and ordinary member.

Evans stepped down as president following a visit by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) representative Cheikh Thiare at the end of February.

The ASA interim board, led by chairperson Sello Mokoena, agreed to step down, which allowed the embattled federation to appoint a seven-member ad hoc committee.

Thiare met both factions of the ASA leadership at the time and found that administrators had reached a stalemate after a year-long power struggle and that the federation had come to a standstill.

Evans was first elected president in July 2011 after a tumultuous three-year ride following the suspension and removal of former ASA president Leonard Chuene and his board.

A year later, Evans again received the nod while elite marathon runner Hendrick Ramaala was elected vice-president.

Ramaala and Geraldine Pillay - the only remaining members of Evans' depleted board before they stepped down - have not been nominated this time.

Harold Adams, who was the only person to challenge Evans in 2012, was nominated for president and vice-president. Mokoena, Steve Mkasi and Aleck Skhosana's names have also been put forward to head the federation.

Mokoena has also been nominated for vice-president and cross country chairperson.
