Semenya briefing canned

2010-06-10 12:51

Johannesburg - Organisers abruptly cancelled a news conference on Thursday with Caster Semenya, the world 800m champion at the centre of a gender dispute. The sport's governing body said her "procedure" had not yet been completed.

Semenya's advisers released a statement on Thursday, just hours before the planned briefing, saying the Johannesburg news conference had been called off. It did not give reasons for the cancellation.

On Wednesday, the advisers said the news conference would address the "outcomes" of the dispute over Semenya's gender verification tests. Also on Wednesday, a South African news channel reported the 19-year-old runner had been cleared to return to action.

But the International Association of Athletics Federations told The Associated Press on Thursday that a decision on Semenya, who has been sidelined from competition for nearly a year, had not yet been reached.

"The Caster Semenya case is being handled jointly by the IAAF and representatives for Semenya in a satisfactory way," IAAF spokesperson Nick Davies said in a statement.

"It is important to note though that the procedure has still not been completed and must therefore remain confidential. The IAAF will only issue an official statement at the end of the process, which is now well under way."

"Until then, all parties should refrain from making statements that could only cause unnecessary confusion," Davies said.

Semenya has not run competitively since winning the 800m title at the world championships last August in Berlin. Her dramatic improvement in times and muscular build led the IAAF to order gender verification tests.

IAAF president Lamine Diack, who is in South Africa for the World Cup, said last month a solution to the controversy would be found "not later than the end of June".

oops...did someone make a bit of a blunder perhaps ??? She is a he, instead of she being a she

  • bob - 2010-06-10 12:59

Me thinks its because the truth is finally out that she is actually a man child and they need the spin docters to spin before they release there version of what he\she really is..

Seems they didnt have the balls to come clean!

  • Larry - 2010-06-10 13:37

Suspicious? I wonder if they were trying to pre-empt a negative report from the International Athletics Association?

  • BILL - 2010-06-10 13:43

    I smell a rat,but I can't decide if it's a male rat or a female rat!

  • Jannas - 2010-06-10 13:49

It should fite it's legal representatives. They are a bunch of amateurs and it shows in the publicity stunts.

  • polla - 2010-06-10 13:51

there is nothing wrong or radical to say that he is a woman

  • Kim - 2010-06-10 13:52

They are really trying to rig these test results. The test that takes the longest is the chromosome test and that takes two weeks. My grandson went through exactly the same thing. It has already been made public months ago that Caster has an XY chromosome which is the male chromosome. Why not just admit it, accept it and let Caster get on with his / her life.

  • Big G - 2010-06-10 13:57

Yawn, yawn, same circus, same tricks, same idiots. Shame on you ASA!!

  • Pire - 2010-06-10 13:58

Someone took a peek into the envelope...and saw that caster is in fact a man, so they cant broadcast that to the world. Finaly, the the truth comes out.

  • Roland - 2010-06-10 14:11

So what about eTV already saying that she can run again in a female race - note - did not say she is female, but could run in a female race - seems very odd!

  • jay - 2010-06-10 14:19

please, let HIM rest in piece!!

  • Me - 2010-06-10 14:19

And this morning the ANCYL congratulated her on the finding that she is a she. Weird.

  • Jaco - 2010-06-10 14:34

How f@#$% diffcult can it be to resolve this problem or get to the truth - seems that we lost the 3rd world war?

  • WONDER - 2010-06-10 14:37

  • BlaqTizza - 2010-06-10 14:38

    Let him run.

  • Richard - 2010-06-10 14:50

The cruelty displayed on this forum toward a person facing this type of issue is really sad. What tries to pass as witty comments, really only shows what a sick and twisted society we live in. A society generally deserves and gets what it puts out there. We should therefore, probably not be surprised at the level of hatred in crimes committed upon ourselves.

  • Tommy - 2010-06-10 14:54

Just like the Selebi and McBride case this sh*t goes on and on. In the old days this crap would have been sorted long ago!

  • Heksie - 2010-06-10 15:00

Al wat ek weet is dat as sy 'n vrou is, wil ek graag weet wat ek is, want dan wil ek nie meer 'n vrou wees nie!

  • Glen - 2010-06-10 15:00

Some people have no respect for people. Please leave our golden girl alone.

  • explosive - 2010-06-10 15:02

@ Bill--- You say you smell a rat! Then she must be a woman because men smell like dogs!! I wonder how many sniffs the IAAF had to take to find that out?

  • Gina - 2010-06-10 15:10

Please keep Casters results quiet we do not have to know what she is, its been great not having her problems and Malema in the news lately. All we have to worry about now is the SWC that it has a good start and that our nation behaves themselves.

  • MM - 2010-06-10 15:15

@Kim, it is not cut and dry at a chromosone level - a person with XY chromosomes can be female and compete as a female. The main criteria is does your body produce testosterone as a "male body" as this gives an unfair advntage over other female athletes.

  • Tommy - 2010-06-10 15:26

This saga has become rather pathetic. Allow it to run in male and female events - problem solved!

  • Major Shistirrer - 2010-06-10 15:32

FIFA demanded that the press conference is cancelled, because the words "South Africa", "2010" and "balls" would probably be used.

  • Nolly - 2010-06-10 15:34

Let them talk!! I`m very proud of you .You one of the best take care

  • Wally - 2010-06-10 15:48

One thing is certain : Semenya cannot be "the girl popping out of the cake" at a bachelor's party!! Sorry for you, Semenya, the athletics bafoons are again playing with your emotions. Get rid of them by trying something else to do - like coaching athletics to young athletes. I doubt if other world class female athletes would want to compete against you after this circus. Best of luck for you because you are not responsible for your condition.

  • MM - 2010-06-10 15:50

Most people on this board are so naive. I support you Caster and I'm proud you are not hiding but taking a stand! @ Heksie - Try googling "Intersexed" and educate yourself. You are one of the naive.

  • i rold you so - 2010-06-10 15:59

aw come on when my kids went to perschool thet had Show and Tell. come on guys

  • Raj - 2010-06-10 16:18

I don't understand how we embrace natural athletes but reject castor- she is not augmented by drugs or synthetics - she is natural. Whats net- do we ban Usain Bolt from running because he has a great genetic structure...or maybe because the other ahtletes complain because they cant beat him!

  • 2c - 2010-06-10 16:24

I feel so sorry for this girl. I can not begin to feel what she must be going through. If your careers depended on bafoons like these blundering idiots, you all would have lost it by now. You hang in there girl!!!

  • MM - 2010-06-10 16:26

@ i rold you so - what point are trying to make?

  • charlie - 2010-06-10 16:30

The media release said ' her procedure had not been complete'. Is this a medical procedure to enable her take part in womens athletics. If so is anyone going to come clean about it. It can't take 10 months to analyse a report.

  • TYPICAL - 2010-06-10 16:43

Oh no. We are so used to the ANC corruption. So now that the entire world already knows she is a he, who is the ANC gonna bribe this time? Sorry mates, the world gives a shit for the ANC. Minister of Sport just fuc@ked up aigain. Nothing new.

  • Baboon monitor - 2010-06-10 16:49

I would bust a gut for a six pack like that!!!

  • @ Richard - 2010-06-10 16:49

No my friend. The ANC fu@#ed up again. We are used to it and the ANC should be held accountable.

  • EMILE - 2010-06-10 16:55

Another political fu@# up. This is why the ANC should stay out of sport. This poor man. What is he now? Nothing anyone ever says again will change general opinion. She is a he and that is as clear as day light.

  • President - 2010-06-10 16:58

Caster for president!!!! Surely can't be less of an example. Just pull it out and show us.

  • Dave - 2010-06-10 17:02

Oh no! This suspense is killing me!!!

  • Lily - 2010-06-10 17:40

Its another balls up or a cock up by the Minster of Sport and ASA Why don't they support her medically, emotionally & spiritually. If she requires an operation or hormone treatment or whatever to rectify the reason for the doubts about her condition. Help her instead of making her a political toy or ploy

  • smelly - 2010-06-10 20:08

    Hey explosive , I smell a fish.
