Semenya back on track soon

Cape Town - Controversial athlete Caster Semenya's return to competition should be announced in less than a month, South Africa's sports minister said on Thursday.

Last September, Stofile declared a "third world war" if Semenya was barred from competing after leaked media reports that the 800m world champion was a hermaphrodite.

"The third World War that we declared has been won. There has been a war for the last five months and we won 99% of the issues," said Stofile.

"The last one which I have no doubt that will be won in the next three weeks is the announcement that Caster goes back to the track.

"Scientists in South Africa and abroad agree on what should be done and they will make an announcement in due course."

Semenya has said she will return to competitive athletics in June, after world athletics' ruling body the IAAF releases her gender test results.

"I reiterate that based on medical and legal advice, I am firmly of the view that there are no impediments to me racing in female athletics competitions," she said last month.

The IAAF announced shortly before her win at the Berlin championships last year that the runner would have to undergo sex verification tests.
