Ramaala eyes top ASA job

Johannesburg - Former New York marathon champion Hendrick Ramaala wants to take over as the head of Athletics South Africa (ASA) when a new board is elected in a few months' time.

Ramaala sits on the interim board that was voted in last November after ASA president Leonard Chuene and his executive were suspended with senior members of ASA staff - all of whom face disciplinary hearings for financial mismanagement and their bungling of the Caster Semenya gender controversy.

And the 38-year-old, who will compete in the Lake Biwa marathon in Otsu, Japan on March 7, believes he has what it takes to rebuild the sport.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't want the president's position," Ramaala said on Thursday.

"We, as athletes, understand athletics and we know what the problems are. We are ready to take back our sport."

The veteran distance runner, who holds the South African 10 000m and half-marathon records, said he would remain competitive as an athlete and still have time to lead the ASA administration.

"Not one person on the previous board didn't have other business interests," Ramaala said.

"Sometimes board members in sports organisations don't even pitch for meetings because they have other commitments, but I've got the time to do the job.

"I train in the mornings, and then I have the whole day free, and I can work my life around my responsibilities as president. I only travel two or three times a year for short periods of time.

"At the moment, on the interim board, we meet once a month. These monthly or weekly meetings are nothing. I'm ready for a real challenge."

Last month ASA interim board member James Evans resigned because he felt South Africa's Olympic governing body (SASCOC), who took over the federation after Chuene and his board were suspended, were not allowing athletics experts to run the sport. And Ramaala agrees that the only way ASA will recover from the mess created by the former board is to hand the sport to those with experience in athletics.

"We don't want to be explaining to people what a 100m sprint is, or why the national cross country championships are important, or why the national marathon trials should not be held a month before a global championship," Ramaala said.

"The athletes are more than ready to run the organisation. You don't need a political degree to run this organisation - you need to understand athletics.

"Other sports are so far ahead of us because they are run by people who understand those sports and have played those sports, but athletics has been run by people who have never run in their lives. You only have to look at their waistbands to realise that."

The ASA interim board must be replaced by a permanent executive by the end of May - the end of the six-month deadline given to ASA administator Ray Mali and his team - and Ramaala will take his first step to finding a seat on that board this weekend.

The Central Gauteng Athletics provincial association will elect a new board on Saturday, and Ramaala has been touted as the favourite for the president's seat.

"I have been approached by some people who say they want me for that position," Ramaala said, "and if it's offered I will accept it.

"If I don't say yes, I will be failing my supporters and my sport. We must not allow power mongers who don't care about the sport to take over again."

It is a pity the top job has to go to a POC. If that was not the case I would recommend Vreni Welch for the position as she has proven over the years what can be achieved when actually done for the sake of the sport and not for the pocket.

Ramaala is a nice guy, with a law degree, but no experience. He has respect among athletes. He has proven that he can run well and study well enough to pass, but he hasn't put his degree to practise and hasn't done anything except run for the last twenty years. Also, as a member of the interim board he speaks out against SASCOC and the ASA administrators. So why is he still on the board if he doesn't agree with them? Or, why isn't he more effective on the board currently? Will he be a "lame duck" President? @pieter: Freitag had money. He pissed it all away on extravagant spending. Assault charges etc didn't help him either...

Hendrik Ramaala is right man to lead athletics in this country, Ramaala got all it takes to be a leader,is not bias he knows his story and is educated africanman.again he does not read athletics on the books he knows athletics.

Now Lisa, dont be silly - Malherbe is a whitey, that surely wont do no matter how qualified he is. You see in our democratic non racial utophia it is still about colour.

I have trained with both James Evans and Hendrik Ramaala. they are both good men. we would be proud to ahve either or both of them represent athletes and run ASA. they are both bright and experienced. If it is to be Hendrik, then we will be lucky. don't forget that he has 2 degrees. one of which is a law degree.

As far as I am aware Hendrik has not been nominted to serve is any position on the CGA Board or Commissions (nominations closed on the 28th January), so I don't see how he can lead CGA. The issue about becoming ASA President is a different issue

Hendrik is a great guy, as is Arnaud. Both are Olympians and both have great heads on their shoulders. There is no shortage of good admin talent, they were always simply sidelined. No one should make comments without knowing the people. As for distance runners - they are great and SA did win a gold at the Atlanta Olympics remember. Equally sprinters don't understand this aspect like a distance athlete does, but a President needs to lead not run every aspect of the admin.
Lisa2/25/2010 3:43 PM
What about Arnaud Malherbe for the president's seat? 3 time Olympian, 400m record holder, postgraduate qualifications in finance, he's a good option. Experience plus financial-knowhow.

Henry you chop! Fordyce was an ultra distance runner, he knows zip about "track and field", i.e. the Olympic disciplines. Personally, I would not appoint any middle/long/ultra distance runner in this positon. Anyone who can run that far, finishing with burning lungs, aching legs, swollen knees and ankles, and feeling as if the soles of their feet were chewed off by cannibals, ans claiming they enjoyed it, can be dishonest in other ways as well... ;-)

With Hendrick and Bruce - And the DA auditing the ASA - Maybe we will have one department that is run without someone needing to "help themselves" to the funds. The funds will be used in the correct manner. I feel sorry for our athletes - How can they go further when managment is so unstable?
Boss Barry2/25/2010 3:14 PM
What about the MAN, Julius Malema ???
Johann @DTS2/25/2010 3:06 PM
"Koos you D***..." That really made me laugh! what a beaut!
piet2/25/2010 2:58 PM
Give him a break. This guy is a law graduate from Wits. He certainly has more qualifications than most!
pieter2/25/2010 2:56 PM
Its a step in the right direction. I fully agree that the athletes should have a bigger say. Why can the president drive a R1 merc, and a talented, guy like Jaque Freitag, who needs support, and a shrink, can't train because he doesn't have money. He needs to word for his bread.
henry2/25/2010 2:38 PM
Why not approach Bruce Fordyce ?
Dont throw stones2/25/2010 2:37 PM
Koos you doos! Wrong guy. Hendrick wasn't drunk disrupting the ASA meeting, so get your facts right before you comment. Plus which, if you saw what he did behind the scenes for a group of local athletes without financial means you may have a differing opinion about motives. What is more, he gives rats about politics and is not afraid to speak his mind, even if it harms his long term prospects. Sadly that may come back to hurt his ambitions here. Cheap Merc, you may be right on business acumen, but the guy does have a law degree and has survived as a "pro athlete" for a decade in an amateur sporting code run by a really amateur sports federation and unscrupulous administrators. If Hendrick surrounded himself with the right management team, he'd be better than you think.
Lance @ Koos2/25/2010 2:26 PM
No he wasn't the guy who rocked up with a bunch of drunks - try Hendrik Mokganyetsi - but I am sure your opinions on his leadership qualities and his motives are well researched
Graham2/25/2010 2:21 PM
Well said "cheap merc".
Fiasco2/25/2010 2:15 PM
Can ASA for once get a knowledgable person on board? Ramala is a little Julius with a political agenda.
cathee2/25/2010 2:10 PM
This has to be a step up from Chuene at least...
Koos2/25/2010 1:41 PM
Honestly - all political issues aside, this guy has no leadership qualities. He was the guy who rocked up at the althletes meeting disrupting the gathering together with a bunch of drunk "athletes". He definitely does not put altheletes first, and I would not be far from the truth speculating that he has alterior motives.
Cheap Merc2/25/2010 1:40 PM
nice guy but what business and financial experience does Hendrick have? Good sportsmen arent always good administrators! Or does everyone wants a Merc for R1?
