Cape Town - Oscar Pistorius was spotted 'training' at the University of Pretoria’s sport grounds, according to a report in Beeld.
A learner from Voortrekker High School in Pietermaritzburg, who was in Pretoria on a hockey tour, took a picture of Pistorius training on Sunday, March 24 at 10:15.
The photo was published on the hockey team’s WhatsApp group at 10:21 that same day, Charmaine Koekemoer, the school’s director of sport, confirmed.
“When we drove past the athletics track one of the kids shouted: ‘There is Oscar, there is Oscar’,” said Koekemoer.
“That’s when I saw him standing there. Not one of us had any doubts. We saw Oscar train.”
Before Koekemoer contacted the newspaper, two independent sources also revealed that Pistorius had trained at Tuks on the weekend of March 21.
Pistorius’s agent, Peet van Zyl, confirmed that the athlete was at the grounds on March 24, but insisted “he didn’t go there to train”.
Van Zyl said Pistorius was there to "assist an Australian training squad” and wore his athletics gear just to “run around a bit”.
The hockey team was attending a clinic at Tuks’ astro hockey turf. Their captain, 17-year-old Carmen Potgieter, who is also an athlete, was determined to see either Pistorius or Caster Semenya on the athletics track.
“I looked towards the athletics track and saw a guy walking around without legs. His training attire was black and he wore glasses. I told everyone ‘there is Oscar’. It was unbelievable, because he is a hero to many people.”
Seventeen-year-old Lisa Smith took a picture.
“We come from Pietermaritzburg and never see any famous people. I took a picture of him walking on the track. It looked like he had just finished running.”
Pistorius is charged with murder for the
February 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He has been released
on bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for June 4.
