Cape Town - The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) could not comment on the shooting of a woman at paralympian Oscar Pistorius's home on Thursday.

"SASCOC, like the rest of the public, knows no more than what is in the public domain, which is there has been an alleged fatal shooting on the basis of a mistaken identity and an apparent assumption of a burglary," the Olympic body said in a statement.

"The organisation is in no position to comment on the incident other than to say our deepest sympathy and condolences have been expressed to the families of all concerned."

Beeld reported on its website that Pistorius allegedly accidentally shot his girlfriend dead.

Police spokesperson Lt-Col Katlego Mogale confirmed police were called to Pistorius's home in the Silver Lakes Golf Estate in Boschkop, Pretoria, on Thursday morning following a shooting.

"Paramedics declared the woman dead on the scene and police proceeded with their investigation. The woman sustained wounds to her head and the upper body," Mogale said.

A 9mm pistol was recovered.

Beeld reported that the shooter thought she was a robber.

Mogale said a 26-year-old was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court later on Thursday.

She said the victim's name could only be released once her next of kin had been informed.

SASCOC said: "There is a police investigation, as is customary with any shooting... it would be irresponsible and inappropriate to comment... until the official investigative process has been completed."

Athletics SA president James Evans said the governing body for the sport could also not comment.

"It is a private matter and we don't have all the facts," Evans said.
