Mokoena wins gold in Oslo

Oslo - South African world long jump silver medallist Khotso Mokoena won gold at Thursday's Oslo Bislett Games with an 8.08m leap but he is still in search of a World Championships qualifying jump of 8.20.

Mokoena made his leading jump with his first attempt of 8.07 and held onto it until his last jump improved his distance by a centimetre.

His nearest rival Morten Jensen of Denmark could only manage 8.01 with Louis Tsatoumas (7.96) of Greece in third place.

South Africa's World 800m Champion Caster Semenya ran a season-best 1:58.61 but only managed to finish in third place.

South African javelin throw champion Robert Oosthuizen continued his fine form this season with his third podium spot.

Oosthuizen took a short-lived lead with his first heave of the evening with a throw of 82.07m.

He only managed one more legal throw but his first was good enough to give him his second silver medal spot in the series.

The 24-year-old lost out to Matthias de Zordo of Germany who finished first with his third attempt of 83.94.

Oosthuizen now shares the lead in the series with Czech Petr Frydrych and Tero Pitkamaki of Finland on five points each.
