Mokoena leaps to 3rd spot

Johannesburg - Olympic long jump silver medallist Khotso Mokoena opened his 2011 track and field season with third spot at a meeting in Germany at the weekend.

Mokoena was competing in the Sparkassen Cup indoor competition in Stuttgart. He ended with a leap of 7.91 metres to finish behind Greece’s Luis Tsatoumas (8.08) and Kafetien Gomis  (8.08m).

The South African, silver medallist at both indoor and outdoor world championships, opened his competition with an effort of 7.68m and followed that up with leaps of 7.78, 7.91 and 7.90m.

He ended level with Ghana’s Ignisious Gaisah and got third-place on a countback from the former world indoor champion.

“The meeting was OK,” said Mokoena, who struggled with niggling injuries in the latter part of 2010. “The feeling started to come back to me again. It’s been a while and I am grateful to the Almighty for third place. It feels good to start competing again and 2012 is in my sights.”

Mokoena’s next scheduled meeting is in Stockholm, Sweden on 18 February.
