Arrest in Bester robbery

Johannesburg - Security guards at a Marabastad shopping centre arrested a man linked to the robbery of former Comrades winner Nick Bester, Pretoria police said on Friday.

"The t-shirt and cellphone that belong to the victim was found in his possession," Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi told Sapa.

He said the security guards arrested the 31-year-old man on Thursday afternoon because he "looked suspicious".

"The security guards took him to the police station in Pretoria Central where he was detained. He will appear in court soon."

No other arrests had been made.

Bester was overpowered by three men while cycling around 06:15 next to the Mabopane highway in Pretoria on Thursday morning.

"Before I knew what was going on, they pulled me from my bicycle, threw me onto the ground and started kicking and beating me," Bester told Beeld newspaper.

"One of them put a knife to my throat and asked for firearms and money. I told them I do not ride with that."

He suffered a broken rib and his mountain bike worth R50 000 was stolen.

The three men, two of them armed with knives, took his cellphone and watch.

"One of them cut my cycling shirt off my body and also cut the elastic band of my cycling shorts. He put his hand in front of my shorts to look for money."

Bester said they pulled him into the bushes where he was tied up. He later managed to free himself and get a lift back home.

Bester won nine gold medals in the Comrades marathon and was the overall winner in 1991.
