Firstly I want to say that I enjoyed the Currie Cup last year for the first time in a very long time because my team were actually winning for a change and they were playing for each other and they were passionate.
I got happy after the first Super 15 game when we have beaten the Cheetahs and I really thought that this was going to be our year where we will finish in the top 6 at the least. We had very difficult games up to now and it really doesn't help when our players get injured one by one and we basically have to play with a Vodacom Cup team. There were too many close games. Bottom line is we didn't use our opportunities when we were presented with them. We could have won atleast two games extra if we just used all our opportunities.
After thinking alot and debating with myself I realize that the problem is not with the coach or the way they play but rather their psychological battle within them. There is too much individualism in their play and the passion and togetherness of a team who want to win like we saw last year in the Currie Cup final especially is lacking. Their confidence is lacking with each other.
Maybe they have gotten "grootkop" (bigheaded) like we would say in Afrikaans. The only thing I know at this point is if they don't start playing like a team with a fighting spirit and a team who wants to win we will win the wooden spoon once more and we will not be present in next year's Super 15 which will be a tremendous blow to Johannesburg's pride and to the Golden Lions Rugby Union.
