As someone who has always backed the underdog, one can only be happy that the lack of quality fly-halves of a few years back is now something truly behind us. But luckily our own Mr. Reliable is certainly back with a score to settle. Yes the 'young-ens offers some more options on attack, but what Morne Steyn lacks in flair he makes up in 50+ Meter penalty accuracy.
He's had quite the career thus far, first living in the shadow of the Loftus "Liefling", but the second the sun shone on him he excelled in every level.
Yes, 2012 was not his finest year, but sometimes a little bit of booing can get you to focus again on what is important. I still firmly believe that in the Northern Hemisphere conditions he is the guy who should be donning the number 10 jersey. Not because he has flair in abundance, but because he has the far superior tactical kicking game to any fly-half currently applying his trade in South Africa.
He will almost certainly always keep your team going forward with one of his "Banana Kicks"
But then again, 2 years with Lambie, Jantjies or Goosen at the helm might just give them that extra dimension to their games?
But until they can prove themselves to be a tactically astute fly-half who can kick at roughly 80 - 85% in tests - They should consider double underwear because they'll be catching splinters off the bench for a while to come.
May talent reign supreme...
