'Sloppy' Lopsy must step up

Cape Town - Sport24 readers say Lonwabo Tsotsobe has to sharpen his fitness and improve his fielding if he wants to continue to play for the Proteas.

The 29-year-old left-arm seamer had an off-day in the field in the third Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, as he showed that he continues to be a liability in the Proteas' fielding effort.

Tsotsobe suffered a humiliating day, conceding 49 runs in his alloted four overs (at a damaging 12.25-to-the-over average), let a ball go through his legs on the boundary, and dropped a routine catch.

Although Tsotsobe is undeniably a good limited-overs bowler, and he was not the only poor performer for the Proteas on the day, it is believed he needs to improve and put in more effort into other areas of his game if he wants to retain his place in the side.

Sport24 readers appear to be losing patience with an out-of-sorts Tsotsobe.

This is what they had to say about Tsotsobe's performance against Sri Lanka.

"He has misfielded and dropped catches many times...that's really scary...if no one helps him lift that aspect of his game. Also, he could do more with the bat."
- UNITY

"Tsotsebe is an under-achiever with erratic bowling and his fielding skills are poor. I am sure that the there a better players to choose from." - Erich Goosen

"The ICC ODI rankings says he is 9th best bowler in the world. He needs to learn how to field though." - Spike Porcupine

"You cannot be a poor fielder when playing for South Africa, full stop. doesn't matter how good a batsmen or bowler you are. Take our test team for example: we have excellent fielders, our slip cordon is probably the best in the world at the moment. no place for mediocre fielding in any South African team." - Wesley Rousseau

"True, Lopsy needs to work on his fielding and fitness levels. But he has been one of the stand out performers this series with the ball"
- Elliott Gxolo

"Lopsy's fielding is atrocious but naturally he is a good bowler." - Steven Theron

"I dont think anyone can doubt Tsotsobe's talent with the ball in hand. The problem though is that talent alone is never enough, talent needs a great work ethic to accompany it for one to achieve any level of greatness." - Duma Buntu Maqubela

"Lopsy has been the worst fielder for a while now. He needs to pull up his socks or he must go. But lots of them should start performing better, not just Lopsy."
- Sarel van Deventer
