VIDEO: John Smit discusses John Plumtree's sacking

The Sharks have confirmed that coach John Plumtree will leave the team when his contract expires at the end of this year.

Smit said the decision to replace Plumtree with Brendan Venter was made to 'freshen up' the Sharks team with new ideas.

In our online poll a majority of Sport24 readers believed it was the right time for Plumtree to go, with only 12% of readers saying the decision would come back to haunt Smit.

Sport24 asked:"John Smit's first decision as Sharks CEO to fire coach John Plumtree will prove to be..."

These were the results:

40% - A masterstroke. Time for fresh blood at the Sharks
29% - Too early to tell
19% - It what all new CEOs do. They like to stamp their authority on Day 1
12% - Will come back to haunt him. Brendan Venter is no better coach

Here's what Sport24 readers had to say about Brendan Venter's appointment:

"Exciting times ahead for shark fans. Thanks Plum for your years of service as a player and coach. Looking forward to the new era."
- Paul Moal

"They should have appointed Peter de Villiers. He is use to working under John Smit."
- Andre Rabie

"Plum served the Sharks well but some positive change is good to go forward. John has good history with the Sharks and will want to continue that so I trust his faith in Brendan. Exciting times ahead." - Gary Doyle

"Brendan Venter is a top level coach. Astute rugby brain. Thanks Plum for building a formidable team."
- Isreal Levi

"Sorry to see you go Plum. Thank you for all you have done for the Sharks. But welcome Brendan. Looking forward to a refreshed Sharks set up."
- Michael Hogg

"Excellent appointment! Plum has done well but the time has come for fresh ideas. With Brendon and John involved the Sharks will prosper. If you have some loose money lying around, this is a worthy investment." - Anton Venter

"The Sharks have played in many finals under Plumtree in his reign as head coach where they should have won silverware but the Sharks did not show. Plumtree should be addressing things like that and also bringing change to the style of the game that the Sharks should be playing. In the last year or two the Sharks have been playing a very one directional and static game with no new ideas. I think that it is time for a change of manager with new ideas which could only be good for the Sharks."
- Barry Morel

"At last....action ....maybe on the field next season."
- Bronwen Felicity Eldridge Phillips

"Thank goodness someone in this country is using him at a top level... Sharks to be resurgent and Venter to become next Bok coach!" - Brad Mitchell

"I think John Plumtree has taken the Sharks as far as he could and has done well. I think however, the Sharks need a change at top so this is no surprise."
- Bill Burgess
