Should SA ditch Super Rugby?
Yes.
First of all the financial benefits would be immense. We would no longer prop up New Zealand and Australian rugby by subsidising them with our funds.
Why should we fund them? The SANZAR experiment has only made clear how the Australasian alliance has thwarted us at every turn. Every suggestion we have made (eg. Six Super Rugby teams) that didn’t suit them has been shot down in flames. Every proposal that didn’t suit us but suited them has soared like an eagle.
The truth is the SANZAR alliance is riddled with the same problems of amateur rugby governance as our own old and rotten provincial system, where money doesn’t govern decisions, when as a professional sport, it should.
And for those of you saying “to be the best you need to beat the best” and that the level of our rugby will suffer playing against northern hemisphere teams I have news for you: northern hemisphere rugby is getting better and better and will eventually be superior in quality to Super Rugby.
It is a natural evolution. The best players follow the money. The money comes from the north. It is only a matter of time before the quality of their leagues becomes better than ours.
This is evidenced by the fact that Saracens beat the Sharks the other day. What’s that? It was a weakened Sharks team, you say. It was also a weakened Saracens team FYI.
I’d say when all is said and done Super 15 is so watered-down now by all the extra teams and the lower standard of rugby that you’d probably find the best European teams in the world Clermont, Toulon, Leinster and Saracens are probably better than Crusaders, Brumbies, Sharks and Chiefs.
What are your thoughts on the subject?
Yes.
