They have been the number one test team in the world and quite deservedly so. Their one day record isn’t as rosy but hey!!! That’s sport. And finding their feet they most certainly are.
A lot of ex legends are trying to recall their glory days by bagging the team at the first opportunity.
Two South African cricket legends, Clive Rice and Ray Jennings, have lashed out at the Proteas for not going for the win against India in the first Test at the Wanderers. In Clive’s last few seasons as captain of the Transvaal mean machine (as the Gauteng Lions were known then) he would rather not lose and force a draw rather than going for win. Obviously a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Clive, you got a raw deal with politics of the day, but it’s no reason to do your laundry in public or bagging the team you briefly represented.
Why the booing at the Wanderers ? It isn’t as if they used tax payer’s money to build an extensive mansion now did they?
Daryll Cullinan said the match between India and the Proteas had 'degenerated into the Kallis show'. Darryl, weren’t you Shane Warne’s bunny? Did we support you? Without a doubt.Were you not part of the team when the Proteas had what was known as the “90 for 5” syndrome in test cricket?
Even then you were supported blindly by avid Protea cricket fans including myself.
Jacques Kallis carried more than his fair work load and he played the bulk of his cricket after the Hansie Cronje scandal and the 99 semi final ODI loss when SA cricket was in disarray and lacking depth. When all was falling around him he played his game while not letting the politics and criticism affecting him in the least. The bloke is a legend and the best cricketer we have produced. His bowling has broken many a stubborn batting partnership. He is the third highest run scorer of all time. But a fair number of folks prefer to remember him as a slow scorer.
And to all the Graham Smith haters, the bloke isn’t everybody’s favorite and many (including yours truly) called for his head numerous times. Graham took over at a young age of 23 and took more onto his shoulders than most classic cricketers could handle. With South-African politics as it is, he has fought hard to promote cricket in disadvantaged communities and developing non-white players to get selected on merit and not on skin colour. He might not be everybody’s cup of tea despite run scoring averaging almost 50 after 10 years.
The once mighty Australian team still gets supported through thick and thin. And their current record prior to the recent ashes test has been pretty thin. But still Aussie cricket fans pitch up in droves. Do you hear ex Aussie players bagging their players? No.
There is a time and place for blind loyalty. The time is now and always and blind loyalty is to your sports team.
