Cape Town - Springbok coach
Heyneke Meyer's fans say that patience is required, as, unlike his predecessor, Meyer did not inherit a Rugby World Cup-winning team...
GALLERY: Meyer's missing menMeyer's supporters have said that he is still the best man for the job and that those so eager to get rid of him, oppose him because of their own provincial bias.
Meyer is the most decorated coach in South Africa - domestically - with numerous Currie Cup and Super Rugby titles to his name and appeared a shoo-in for the job when he was finally appointed in January this year.
Since his coaching stint with the Boks began, Meyer's reign has been hamstrung by injuries to key Springboks, including Bismarck du Plessis,
JP Pietersen, Heinrich Brüssow,
Pierre Spies,
Schalk Burger,
Juan Smith,
Coenie Oosthuizen and
Chiliboy Ralepelle.
In addition, Meyer has had to contend with the retirement of several key Springboks, including Fourie du Preez and
Victor Matfield; and the overseas departure of Bakkie Botha, Jaque Fourie and
Ryan Kankowski, among others.
Here is what Sport24 readers had to say about Meyer:
"Give up this provincialism nonsense and lets gets behind our team no matter where they come from." - Serena Boyle
"I am a Stormers supporter but when it comes to the National team we must all remove our blinkers and think about what is best for the Nation." - Erasmus Rafeeq
"Saturday morning my Sharks jersey is put away to on put my Bok jersey.
Any selections I disagree with simply will not matter as I scream for
the Bokke." - david.s.duncan1
"Aren't we all suppose to support the Boks..." - chaplinncharlie
"Meyer is still the man for the job." - Macziekpk
"The big issue here is that HM has got nothing to work with. most of the
first choice players are out because of injuries or really poor form. I
have faith in HM's vision but we have to give him some slack because he
really doesn't have much to choose from. There are some good guys out
there, but most have no experience and have yet to really prove
themselves. Let's give HM and his team all the support we can. We need
to look at the big picture here!" - brandon.stephenson946
"Look ... we are all living room selectors and each and every one of us would
choose a different line up. We have to remember that guys like HM and
company are professionals at what they do and have the credentials to
prove it." - BS946
"If they had given HM the team he would have inherited from JW when PDV
was given the job it would have been interesting to see what results we
would have had." - M
"We played 5 games and lost 0 so far. Give the coach some space, we can evaluate him at the end of the year." - deon.louw7505
"After we beat the Aussies on Saturday I hope that the Bok "fans" blinkers will fall off.
My Blood is green and gold and my tears of passion will flow, win or lose!" - 2coolnick
"If PDV or any other coach had to be the Bok coach right now with all the
injuries and available players, we would most likely have lost a few
games by now.
All the idiots should take off their idiot glasses." - vivadabok
"It's provincialism! There are none so blind as those with white and blue
striped blinkers." - Truetotheblue
"Planning my trip to the 2015 Rugby World Cup and looking forward to seeing HM and team holding the trophy aloft." - TTTB
"So let's all agree then: Zap the 5 Bulls in the team, replacing them
with the Papsak midgets. Also get rid of HM, replace him with AC from
the Stompies.
Then sit back and watch how the Bokke choke in every important game, and
not win anything for 12 years and counting..." - Jared VN
"Every Bok grows up with dreams of becoming a Bull." - Charles Dumbwin
Fans might not always like the team selection or tactics, but they support their team regardless. (Gallo Images)HAVE YOUR SAY: South Africa coach
