Cape Town - Sport24 readers believe Bafana Bafana will fail to top their 2014 Soccer World Cup qualification group, despite being handed a lifeline by FIFA.

FIFA has confirmed that the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has been sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player in their 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifier against Botswana.

The sanction means South Africa have to beat Botswana and hope Ethiopia lose or draw with the Central African Republic in their final qualifier on September 7 in order to top their qualifying group and progress to the next stage of the qualification process, but most fans were sceptical about the likelihood of that happening.

This is what Sport24 readers said about Bafana's World Cup hopes:

"It's still a long way 2 go for Bafana." - Zuko Mpulampula

"Bafana will not qualify for the word cup at the expense of Ethiopia because they had their fate in their own hands but could not capitalise on that and now everything depends on what happens in the game between CAR and ETHIOPIA." - Ncedo Mkhetshane

"Ethiopians are not gonna lose to CAR trust me, so forget 2014 and focus on 2018." - Gabriel Prince T Ndlovu

"Ethiopia are still in the lead & aren't gonna lose to the C.A.R.! Our boys won't qualify!" - Loyiso Bond Stongu

"Talk about grasping at straws... Stop clinging to hope, just let it go already." - Nicholas Cherry

"Hope is always good. We will let go after Ethiopia wins, which they will." - Thulani Mdletshe

"They will still have to play 2 matches against a team that has also made it to the final round of qualification. there will be 10 teams in all and only 5 will make it to Brazil." - Simbarashe Dzingai

"I dont think CAR will defeat Ethiopia or get a draw.So no, i dont see us qualifying." - Sizwe Vilakazi

"They must learn to score their own goals (no pun intended) to qualify and not rely on FIFA rules to help them qualify." - Thabo Mtaner

"So SA will be the only team to be eliminated twice... quite fitting actually." - Freddie Miller

"Let's face it, we are not going to Brazil." - Obza Obet Moy

"Bafana doesn't deserve to play in the World Cup." - Joe Marsh

"As a country we must admit that soccer is not our thing, after watch confed Cup.... I can say the level of soccer in SA is below the lowest level in the world." -Polotonki Kgosi

"Bet they will still stuff it up." - Andre Rabie

"Here we go again..." - Mohapeloa Joel Mohapeloa

"Only way these jokers ever get anywhere is if someone else screws up." - Zohan Steppingstone

"Bafana-Bafana, given on a silver plate yet again. In all the rescent major cups, we are there either for being the host nation and or points deducted from somebody else to give us the Bafana, the slot. How long is this to continue?" - Siphiwe Khuzwayo
