Fans laugh off Bafana lifeline

Cape Town - Sport24 readers believe Bafana Bafana will fail to top their 2014 Soccer World Cup qualification group, despite being handed a lifeline by FIFA.

FIFA has confirmed that the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has been sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player in their 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifier against Botswana.

The sanction means South Africa have to beat Botswana and hope Ethiopia lose or draw with the Central African Republic in their final qualifier on September 7 in order to top their qualifying group and progress to the next stage of the qualification process, but most fans were sceptical about the likelihood of that happening.

This is what Sport24 readers said about Bafana's World Cup hopes:

"Bafana will not qualify for the word cup at the expense of Ethiopia because they had their fate in their own hands but could not capitalise on that and now everything depends on what happens in the game between CAR and ETHIOPIA." - Ncedo Mkhetshane

"They will still have to play 2 matches against a team that has also made it to the final round of qualification. there will be 10 teams in all and only 5 will make it to Brazil." - Simbarashe Dzingai

"I dont think CAR will defeat Ethiopia or get a draw.So no, i dont see us qualifying." - Sizwe Vilakazi
