Cape Town - Although the whole nation is behind Bafana Bafana for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, most fans don't expect them to progress beyond the group stages.
According to Sport24's online poll, more than half (53%) of those that responded didn't expect Bafana to progress out of Pool A.
However, it wasn't all doom and gloom as 13% of those polled predicted Bafana would go on to win the competition - as they did when South Africa last hosted the event in 1996.
In the poll, we asked: How do you foresee Gordon Igesund's Bafana team will do?
And the result was:
53% - Won't progress out the group stage
21% - Beaten quarter-finalists
10% - Will lose in the semi-finals
3% - Will reach the final - but lose
13% - Overall winners!
President Jacob Zuma, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund have expressed confidence in Bafana. However, the general public have been more sceptical following Bafana's poor run of results heading into the competition.
This is what Sport24 readers had to say about Bafana's chances:
"We are gonna get kicked out in the first round just like the World Cup." - D-Man
"You don't have to have played soccer professionally to tell that Bafana are playing (badly)." - Neo Mafabatho
"It's so sad to see how pathetic we South Africans are when it comes to supporting. Have you wondered how Algeria must have felt to draw with a team thats 20 positions behind them..." - Thato Remnant Mahlajati
"It is not just enlightened fans that can see Bafunny Bafunny are bad...the rankings prove it." - Julius.Malememba7
"Do we praise them for falling 8 positions to Nr 84 in the latest FIFA rankings? Bafana deserves criticism and they better up their performance during AFCON; we need them to do us proud." -
"There are too many people with opinions about ALL sport without knowing anything about it." - Graeme Faber
"I bought my tickets for 3 matches in Durban. Gonna have a ball. All the negative people, very sad that you just criticise. Shame! Make the most of it, its awesome occasion to celebrate being South African." - SA.Fanatic.Charou
"Let's be optimistic but not unrealistic! We have all watched Bafana play and we all know what to expect come the 19th of January." - bmaestro
"Let's give them a chance. They might lift the cup!" - SSMonareng
"Let's get behind our boys and the coach..." - Yvette.Meyer
