Cape Town - DStv subscribers have reacted with anger at the news that two ESPN channels will be shutting down at the end of the month.
The American sports channels ESPN (230) and ESPN Classic (231) will no longer be offered in Africa by DStv, effective July 31.
ESPN, which is owned by Disney, made the decision to yank the channels in all non-US territories where their operations are no longer financially viable.
A version of ESPN will however continue to air in the UK after a deal was struck with BT.
This potentially opens up the market for SuperSport - or the SABC - to acquire the rights to broadcast major US sports events such as baseball, basketball, the NFL in South Africa and the rest of Africa.
Predictably, subscribers to the pay-TV operator were quick to voice their disgust and anger at the news.
ESPN to cease broadcasting in Africa via DStv ... the most reprehensible behaviour I have ever encountered. Inconsolable... - Barry Havenga
So DStv is starting to behave like TopTV, by reducing channels now? I wander WHY? - Loyiso Bond Stonga
And the service keeps on deteriorating....... - Cuthbert Murwisi
In that case we should pay less.... - Flip Loots

Some of us are NBA and NASCAR fans so what about us dont we have a say? This is stupid...really unfair - Chicco Antonio
