'No quick fix' to F1's problems

Cape Town - Haas team principal Gunther Steiner has warned that it may be some time before Formula 1 gets its competitive edge back.

Ferrari and Mercedes look poised for a tight title tussle this season but, while Steiner is happy to see two teams battle it out, he wants more to enter the fray so that the sport can attract new fans.

“It’s fantastic for Formula One to have two teams fighting for the lead," Steiner said via the official Haas website.

"I think there should be 10 teams fighting for the win, but that in the short term is difficult. I think F1 is working to make the field tighter, but I don’t know how that would be achieved.

"It’s not a quick fix, but something to consider in the future because there’s only two teams fighting for the lead. It could create a lot of new fans and that is what we want.” However, Steiner did add that a competitive midfield battle this year is keeping everyone on their toes.

He said: "“It’s as tight as it’s ever been. With four to five teams so close together, I cannot remember when that happened, and every weekend it’s mixed up in a different way.

"Any of these teams can go into Q3 and get into the points. It’s a very tense battle, but I think a nice battle and it keeps the constructors championship pretty open for the midfield.”

Haas will be looking to collect points for a third consecutive race this weekend after Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean got the team up and running in China and Bahrain respectively with eighth place finishes.
