Cape Town - Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has commended his teammate Nico Rosberg for his gentleman-like conduct that helped him win the Monaco Grand Prix.
Starting on the grid in P2, Rosberg didn't seem to have the pace to keep up with pole-positioned Daniel Ricciardo in the early stages of the race, which prompted Mercedes to order him to yield to his British teammate.
In doing so, Hamilton went on and won the race, something the World Champion was grateful for, as he thanked his Mercedes colleague for holding up his end of the agreement.
"I said 'thanks for being a gentleman'," the Monaco GP Champion revealed to Sky Sports.
"We have an agreement. When the team ask you to push and are not able to and it hinders the team's chances of winning the race we have that agreement."
The 30-year-old also added that as soon as the rain came pouring down he knew he had every chance of snatching victory from Rosberg or Ricciardo.
"I came here thinking 'I've got to earn it'," he continued.
"I didn't know whether I could win, but the rain opened up the window of opportunity. I was on the limit the whole way."
