Germany - Casey Stoner (Honda) battled hard with Dani Pedrosa (Honda) and Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) to take pole at the Sachsenring ahead of Sunday's German MotoGP Grand Prix.
Stoner's time of 1'21.681 was just 0.252 sec ahead of Pedrosa who was a mere 0.011 sec quicker than Lorenzo.
The second row will be made up of Marco Simoncelli (Honda), Ben Spies (Yamaha) and Andrea Dovizioso (Honda).
After eight rounds of the championship, Stoner leads with 152 points from Lorenzo (133) and Dovizioso (119).
Karel Abraham (Ducati) crashed out three times on the day, but avoided injury. Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha) took a big tumble with just three minutes remaining on the clock and was hit by his bike, but also emerged unscathed.
Five-times world champion Valentino Rossi (Ducati) had a torrid time, qualifying second last and 1.6 sec off the pace.
