PE racing star heads to USA

Port Elizabeth - Teenage South African V8 Supercar racer Vicki Kemp left for the USA on Tuesday having been selected as one of only 40 young motor racing talents from around the globe to compete in the 2010 NASCAR Driver Talent Search and Shoot-Out in Sacramento, California.

Kemp, who is just 19, started her racing career at the age of 10 when her father Eugene Kemp bought her a 60cc GP Junior kart.

She achieved success in 2007 becoming the first girl to win a South African National Karting Championship. In 2010 Kemp got behind the wheel of a powerful V8 supercar and completed her first regional event at Celso Scribante Race track in her hometown of Port Elizabeth.

Her eyes set on becoming the first South African women to compete in the NASCAR series in the US, Kemp views selection for the 2010 NASCAR Driver Talent Search and Shoot-Out as a step closer to realising this dream.

“I was really excited when I heard I’d been chosen but I had to first get a US visa before I could be sure that I could go. Luckily I passed that test and now I can focus on achieving success at the academy next week,” said Kemp.

The Shoot-Out is run by the Ron Sutton Winner’s Circle, a talent scout and driver development programme focused on finding and developing young talent for the NASCAR Cup. America’s number one motor racing series, NASCAR is broadcast in more than 150 countries across the globe.

The programme receives over 700 resumes each year from young drivers and their parents. A maximum of just 40 drivers are selected to do full race track testing and try-outs, with only a chosen few invited to join the three-year programme at the academy.

The academy offers an extensive driving course which includes advanced driver training, experience with race crews, career guidance and contact with talent scouts, driver coaches, team personnel, team managers and owners.

Kemp left Port Elizabeth on Tuesday and travelled to California for testing and race try outs. She will return to SA on Friday, November 19 in time to compete in the final race of the 2010 Wesbank Super Series at Kyalami, Johannesburg from November 26-28.

What is remarkable is that Kemp has achieved so much at the tender age of 19, despite a lack of sponsorship to fund her race team.
