Lorenzo wins after Rossi fall

Jerez - Spanish world champion Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha won the Spanish Grand Prix, the second leg of the world championship, on Sunday after seeing off compatriot Dani Pedrosa and American Nicky Hayden.

Rainy, slithery conditions helped give rise to a number of hair-raising incidents, including a spectacular fall on the seventh lap by six-time event winner Valentino Rossi of Ducati while pole-sitter Casey Stoner also came off his bike.

Ben Spies of Yamaha was another to find the going hard as he ended up in the gravel having stood second at one stage.

Marco Simoncelli of Honda also crashed, in his case after establishing a three second lead, as Lorenzo finished 19.4sec clear of 2008 winner Pedrosa in winning at the venue for the second straight year.

Pedrosa strove manfully as he pushed to the back of his mind all thoughts of the collarbone injury that will require surgery in the coming days after his double fracture in the Grand Prix of Japan.

Stoner, meanwhile, despite winning the opening race of the season in Qatar, once more found himself jinxed at Jerez, where he has never shone, a 2009 podium finish aside.

Stoner's misfortune came after a Rossi mistake when the Italian had fought his way into the leading group only to lose control of his machine and cause a collision with the Australian.

Rossi came in fifth ultimately but Stoner was unable to finish.

Hiroshi Aoyama of Honda took fourth for his best result in the class.

In the Moto2 category, Italian Andrea Iannone powered his Suter to victory with Swiss Thomas Luthi, also on a Suter, second and Italian Simone Corsi (FTR) third.

Spaniard Nicolas Terol won on his Aprilia in the 125cc category with stablemate Jonas Folger of Germany second and Frenchman Johann Zarco, on a Derbi, third.

This is Terol's second win on the trot, after his season-opening triumph in Qatar, which reinforces his lead of the category standings.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
