F1 season highly anticipated

Bahrain - Months of anticipation and speculation finally come to a close this weekend as the 2010 Formula One season gets under way at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Michael Schumacher takes his place on perhaps F1's most competitive starting grid after the former world champion came out of three years' retirement to race for the newly-formed Mercedes GP team, which bought out last year's constructors' champions Brawn GP.

41-year-old Schumacher said he felt like "a child at Christmas" coming to Bahrain, where he'll line up against defending champion Jenson Button, two-time champion Fernando Alonso, 2008 winner Lewis Hamilton and talented Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, among others.

"I love this fight - it is because of this fight that I came back to Formula One," Schumacher said.

Double Bahrain winner Alonso is one of the preseason favourites as the Spanish driver looks positively refreshed following his move to Ferrari, which also welcomes Felipe Massa back for the first time since he suffered a life-threatening crash at July's Hungarian GP.

"It's a very important moment for us after a horrible year. It was also a difficult moment for me with the accident. I'm concentrated, I'm ready 100 percent," said Massa, a double winner in Bahrain. "This is a fresh start for me. For all."

With the past two champions in its lineup the British McLaren team is also among the favourites, particularly after dominating three of the year's four pre-season test sessions. Button partners Hamilton and the former Brawn driver is savouring the No. 1 tag on his car.

"It's a responsibility and an honour - but it's something I'm going to enjoy for as long as I can. I don't want to lose that number from my car," Button said. "There are a number of teams and drivers who appear to be in the hunt, and, as with the start of every new season, it will be fascinating to see who emerges as the team to beat."

McLaren's rear wing is under scrutiny after Red Bull expressed doubts over its design, with the British team confident it conforms to regulations and governing body FIA set to check it at Friday's opening practice.

Button's victory at Sakhir last year is the only non-Ferrari win at the Bahrain International circuit since its debut in 2004, when Schumacher won it.

Schumacher took over Button's seat as Mercedes' Silver Arrows returns to the track for the first time in 55 years with two German drivers at the helm. Nico Rosberg also makes his Mercedes debut.

Schumacher's experience could pay dividends as refueling is now banned, meaning teams will only pit to change tyres. Also, the top ten qualifiers on Saturday will not be able to swap tyres before the start, while the rest of the field can.

"You will have less sets of tyres available than last year which makes it harder to do what you need to do for setting up the car perfectly," said Schumacher, whose win here in 2004 is among his record 91. "But driving is always about adapting to new circumstance, and this is one of my strong points."

Fellow German driver Vettel will be looking to make a mark as Red Bull is expected to be in the title mix a year after it was Brawn's closest challenger.

"You can't underestimate the opposition, but expectations are high at Red Bull now," team principal Christian Horner said. "We just want to get the most we can out of every weekend."

Vettel and teammate Mark Webber are one of only three teams whose drivers lineup has not been altered in the 12-team, 24-car field, along with Toro Rosso and Force India.

Williams, Force India and Sauber are also expected to be in the points and have even been tipped to surprise at a track that has been changed to 49 laps instead of the usual 57. The desert track features a new, longer configuration with eight additional corners making it the second longest race on the 19-track series after Spa.

"We will have good racing there, I think, and all I want is to fight because this is what I missed most," Sauber driver Pedro De la Rosa said as the Spaniard takes the grid for the first time since 2006.

Renault, meanwhile, is hoping just to reach the final qualifying session with Robert Kubica leading the French team.

Three new teams will be on the track as Malaysian-backed Lotus, Virgin Racing and Hispania Racing Team also mark their debuts. HRT-F1 was the only team not to test and only named Karun Chandhok to partner Bruno Senna last week. Senna is the nephew of triple champion Ayrton Senna.

Several of the leading teams have criticised the decision to allow in so many new teams, especially as they are well off the pace.

"I am under no illusions about what we're in for," Chandhok said. "At the end of the day, we will be a new team with two rookies and no testing at all, so the first few races will be very hard indeed. If we can finish the first race that would be an achievement."

@ Mike - i do think there will be increased interest, simply because there are many people who supported him who lost interest after he retired, and also because as Andrew said, there are many people looking forward to seeing him fail. At no point was i trying to suggest otherwise. However, for some people to suggest that it was boring without him, is just plain ridiculous. Unfortunately most of his supporters are of the "jump on the bandwagon" type, just looking for their piece of glory, not true, unbiased followers of the sport. I'm not sure what the point is you're trying to make? @ hates - lol, DAMON HILL? 'Nuff said. @ One-mate - Scroll down and READ. As for Hamilton and Alonso, Hamilton cheated, Alonso was at worst guilty of bad sportsmanship, and i don't even think that was the case - he was merely getting his own back, which he was more than entitled to, and indeed should have done. Whatever the case, neither of them come even close to being as rottenly crooked as MS. Although of course MS did it over many years, so time will tell what the rest do. I'm afraid i see the possibility of Hamilton doing some cheating, but not Alonso. @ Shakespeare - lol, esteemed? A gem?? If your bro is such an avid sports watcher then he would definitely have heard many, many quotes not dissimilar to that one in various sports, including rugby, soccer, and cricket! Seriously now. But hey if you meant it as a joke, then lol.

@ Andrew. Thanx for that one as I can only ever watch that programme when I'm not busy at work and thats not often. I reckon he will do fine. He has the same passion as his Uncle. Senna himself said that the little man was good......... Yes he was only 8 years old but Senna realised his talent early. About living with the Shadow only time will tell on that subject. I just wish Senna Jnr all the luck in the world as he is now living his dream to race in F1!!!!! I just can't wait for tomorrow I am so excited!
William Shakespeare3/11/2010 11:02 PM
@Ebi: I prefer to make up my own quotes, but in this instance shall quote my esteemed brother, an avid sports-watcher, who came up with this gem: "The scoreboard does not have a 'remarks' column." And Michael Schumacher has won seven titles. So that's about that.
One-mate3/11/2010 6:27 PM
Ebi so what you are saying is that the only reason MS won was by cheating, so Hamilton and Alonso have aslo cheated,so do's that apply to them to????
Andrew3/11/2010 6:19 PM
well Mike, if you recall the early "noughties" F1 was terribly boring with MS winning everything, it was especially bad coz Rubens wasnt allowed a fair crack and also there was no real competition around at the time and team orders etc really got out of hand, (remember rubens and michael trying to decide who should go on the top step), I think there may be a rise in interest with MS back but I truly think alot of people will be watching with some morbid fascination to watch him crash and hurt himself..thats my opinion but people are generally morbid folks, thats why Horror headlines sell newspapers!! From a racing perspective alone, this anticipation would be running wild regardless of Michaels return..just look at the driver pairings and the new teams on the grid..As you said, its a huge talking point and we can debate it for hours, thats the beauty of opinion..I am a huge F1 fan and each year my level of anticipation is the same..maybe a little intuiged this year die to the England v Germany battle with the SWC coming up in June..As far as young senna goes, I watched him alot in GP2 and he was highly inconsistent (fair for a young man i guess) but he is terribly unfortunate because he WILL be compared to Ayrton and that is ridiculously unfair, Ayrton was a genius and we truly will never see the likes of him again and if he had lived, we would NOT be discussing MS as a 7 time world champ..One last thing Mike, if you have facebook, join our chatgroup and fantasy league, search south african f1 news and chat...I hope we can all chat on Monday, my prediction is MS will be behind 2 Ferrari's, 2 Mclarens and 2 Redbulls, reliability notwithstanding!! Sjoe, i talk too much..lol
hates3/11/2010 5:12 PM
If my comment hit a nerve, maybe you taking it seriously? As for the irony, sarcasm and humour, its not foreign. I did read your post. I just saw you disliking MS. I'll end my posts on this topic and forum with the following by Damon Hill. "There are two things that set Michael apart from the rest of the drivers in Formula One - his sheer talent and his attitude. "I am full of admiration for the former, but the latter leaves me cold." Kthxbye
Mike3/11/2010 4:34 PM
@Brigit....I watched Bruno on Absolute F1 last night and he seems mature and well groomed in terms of how he handles the press. As Ebi mentioned, he has made significant career progression in a very short space of time. Question is, how will he handle the pressure at the pinnacle of motorsport? I have seen a lot of drivers come through the ranks as top in all classes yet fail when reaching F1. That said, it is terribly exciting to have the name Senna back on track and I genuinely hope he can be great. I also hope he can create his own legacy and move away from that rather large shadow that I am sure he feels he walks in all the time!
Mike3/11/2010 4:23 PM
A question.......do you believe that the return of MS to the grid will result in an increased interest in F1 as opposed to the last three years that he has been away? If not, why not? Another question......the only man currently on the grid to have raced previously with and beaten MS, Alonso (Pedro De La Rosa excluded), has spoken with anticipation and excitement regarding his 'number 1' opponents return, why is that?
Mike3/11/2010 4:09 PM
@Andrew and @Ebi, fair comments to you both. I believe however we will have to agree to disagree on this matter, which I believe will be fiercely debated for many many more years to come. At any rate, a really exciting season ahead of us....I can't wait!! I seriously hope it brings back the heydays of grand prix racing (Senna, Prost, et al).
Ebi3/11/2010 3:31 PM
@ Shakespeare - at least you clearly have some intelligence. I agree with your first few points, but is that not almost always the case, every season, with the guy who finishes second - unreliability? I've said it before and i'll say it again, it's all relative, and the truth is the top drivers are so close in performance that it's more often than not the cars that decide who wins, not the drivers. That's why it's so important to beat your teammate, but in schumi's case, as Andrew pointed out, that's irrelevant, so even that can't be used as a yardstick. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying MS is a bad driver, I'm just saying he's not as good as some people think, and certainly not nearly as good as the true greats of the sport. As for 5,6&7, well that would be three, and even if he managed to win three titles without cheating, do you think there would've been as much hype around the guy, and that people would've been fooled into believing he was as good as they think he is now? And the main point still stands, that he was lucky not to race against truly top class drivers in competitive cars. All things considered, i DO think he would've won a championship (if Button can do it then so can he), but only one, maybe two. And i certainly didn't say he won't be competitive, like i said, he is good, so i'm sure he will be, as long as he has a competitive car. But so will Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Massa, and maybe even Button, Rosberg and Webber. All i'm saying is that all things being fair and equal, he'll be competitve, in some races, and finish the season as the fourth best driver, at best. And it will once and for all put him in his place. After all, if he's as good as some people believe he is, there can be no excuses when he fails to win the championship, can there? If anyone says he couldn't win because of the car, then obviously it follows that when he DID win it was also because of the car. Fact is it will always be debatable, and i know you are of the few intelligent people who actually understand that. The point i, and i think Andrew, is trying to make is that what sets MS apart is his cheating, and for that reason alone whatever he has achieved is almost meaningless.
Andrew3/11/2010 3:25 PM
@ hates...are you freaking ok man, coz ur freaking me the freak out with all your freakiness...So tell me big boy, why you wanna get personal about this?? If u can't make a point without trying to throw personal insults, go back to school, learn lekker then come back and talk to me properly..If you had actually read what I have wrote here, you would take it as I write it, like William Shakespeare did..its called irony, sarcasm and humour, foreign concepts to you?
Birgit Bosch3/11/2010 3:18 PM
@ Andrew. 1st Hero staying under wraps!!!!!!! I feel like a kid waiting to open the BIGGEST present under the tree. I can't wait for Sunday...... It's going to be great to see Schumi back on the track. Just by the way what is everyones thoughts of Senna and what he might do????? According to most sources he is a great driver!
hd3/11/2010 2:21 PM
I get goosies & butterflies in my stomach just reading this article. Can't wait until Sunday. I'm a huge Ferrari fan but the loyalty to MS is still there. Look out for Alonso in the prancing horse !!!
Andrew3/11/2010 2:20 PM
@ Birgit,,,baby, we are more than cool, we're engaged remember!! We had our 1st fight on the internet, aaawwwww, Ortos would be sooo proud...LOL am curious to who is your 1st hero?? and besides, I am only slammin MS coz I know you secretly like it !! hahahahaha...Dont jilt me at the altar if MS gets a hiding ok?! lol
hates3/11/2010 2:18 PM
lol andrew. seriously dude, you been posting how long on these forums? you made how many posts disliking MS.... get over your sad little emotional issues with the guy and move on with your life.... or even better, why dont you shag MS and get it over with... if the people like MS, so freaking be it if you dont like MS, so freaking be it
William Shakespeare3/11/2010 2:16 PM
@Ebi: My dear chap, in MS's penultimate year there were major issues with his Bridgestones, and in the last year - full credit to Alonso - but MS was dogged by reliability issues. Alonso knows very well he got lucky, and said as much. I totally have respect for Alonso though, and he can go wheel to wheel with Michael. As for MS's multiple world championships - you can say that 2 is lucky, or 3 is for luck and cheating, and 4 is for luck and cheating and lack of competion... but 5, 6, and 7... what do you say to that? Do you honestly think that if MS wasn't competitive he wouldn't be back? Nope. He wants #8. Whether its this year or next, you gotta know he's in with a chance. But let's chat again after the weekend, when the picture will be a whole lot clearer.
Ebi3/11/2010 2:01 PM
@ Stevie - you absolutely right, MS is sh!t, you just forgot to add, really stinky sh!t, always has been, always will be. @ hates - WOW, is that the extent of your intelligence?
Neil3/11/2010 1:47 PM
I dont know who will win, but I can tell you who will be the loser. Button. His lack of genuine pace will be showcased next to the brilliance of Hamilton and should Schumi have a competitive car he will be a genuine contender
Andrew3/11/2010 1:42 PM
@ Mike, you see the comments of "hates", it DOESNT matter that he cheated, that's the kind of irrationality I mean regarding MS fans..as long as there is a 7 next to his name, who cares !! LMFAO...it's crazy but it's true...
Ebi3/11/2010 1:28 PM
@ Mike - what do exactly do you mean by "acknowledge his achievements"? If you mean just to state that one is aware of his titles, then fine, acknowledged. But what does that mean? Like Andrew said, it's the way he achieved it that matters. And that renders it virtually meaningless, and not worth taking much note of, certainly when comparing it to what the truly great drivers have done. As for the 7 titles - any good (note - not great) driver would be able to do the same under the same lucky and crooked circumstances. You are entitled to feel privileged, but i for one don't feel the same about watching someone cheat his way to victory and titles at the expense of better and more deserving drivers. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to work it out - the last two seasons MS raced - MS vs Alonso - similar cars performance-wise (Ferarri probably very slightly stronger than the Renault) - Alonso wins, both times. Who's the better driver? And now there's Hamilton and Vettel, both of whom look like they could be as good and possibly even better than Alonso, time will tell. Three absolute top class drivers (i admit Vettel still has a bit to prove), all better than MS, all of whom i think will eventually be recognised as truly great, in one era - now THAT is what i feel privileged to be able to watch. Mind you, i would love nothing more than to see Bruno join them, and from what i've seen so far, and considering he started his career so late, the progress he's made in such a short space of time, i do think he's got all the talent and ability. I just hope he has the same passion and drive as his uncle...
Birgit Bosch3/11/2010 1:21 PM
@ Andrew, sorry if took that out of context. I'm just tired of people slamming MS. Yes he cheated and idi a few things that he shouldn't have. I say give the guy a break this year. New team, new season. Hope we are cool! He is my 3rd hero in life and Senna being my 2nd so ja. Sorry again!!!!
hates3/11/2010 1:04 PM
Ok.... Here is the thing. Andrew I don't see you up there having 7 world champion titles under your name. If he cheated or whatever the case may be, WHO CARES?! For you to still carry on about it says you actually love him. Just get over your fetish with MS and his cheating and deal with it.....
Stevie3/11/2010 1:04 PM
@Andrew babbel babbel b!tch b!tch MS is tha Sh!t
Andrew3/11/2010 12:30 PM
@Mike, see my response to Birgit, as I write this, News24 have not posted it yet. Well done Billy Shake, you read me perfectly...people are soooo sensitive about MS I am FORCED to stir the pot !!! All I know is this, I CANT WAIT ANYMOOOOOREEEE!!!!! On a more serious note @ Mike, if only his achievements weren't littered with errors of judgement and straight out cheating, unfortunately, that is what most NON MS fans remember...Statistics count for little if its tainted and hence I feel no great sense of awe by his 7 world titles...maybe unfortunately for him, he entered F1 at a time of very few competitive drivers, but to then contractually ensure his team mate must finish behind him, well that smacks of fear and not confidence..if he was faster, he wouldnt need a contract like that, surely?? He would do his talking on the track...So if you see that from a non-biased opinion, it makes factual sense but Schuey fans REFUSE to see that and that my friend is why I enjoy stirring, coz he will NEVER go down as the greatest ever, unless he improves his legacy this time round...
Andrew3/11/2010 11:57 AM
Birgit, do you understand the word "joke"?? "Sense of humour"?? "Sarcasm"?? Please, dont YOU also start getting all serious on my ass. Old people go bald and take afternoon naps, MS isnt that old is he?? take a chill pill me dear, life aint THAT serious..
William Shakespeare3/11/2010 11:55 AM
@Birgit: Andrew's post was richly amusing and filled with irony. He is just being facetious! He knows very well, as does everybody else, that Michael is the benchmark. Driving lesson my sainted aunt! Hurt himself or the others... Tee hee again! Of course, his car may need some tweaking, as did his first Ferrari after he and Ross Brawn OBE left Benneton, so we won't necessarily expect fireworks this weekend.
Mike3/11/2010 11:50 AM
Andrew, no one is asking you to like or support MS, but you have to acknowledge his achievements. We all have our own teams and drivers that we support, but to be world champion 7 times!!!! that happens once in a life time. I actually feel very privileged to have witnessed these achievements in my lifetime.......doesn't mean I support him. Come on.....be a good sport.
Birgit Bosch3/11/2010 10:43 AM
Andrew, don't you think you are getting a bit carried away with your dislike of MS. He isn't balding. How can you say that "You hope he doesn't hurt himself or other drivers" Come on dude Not cool in my eyes. I would never bad mouth a driver like that EVER!!!
Andrew3/11/2010 10:20 AM
even without MS this season would have been highly anticipated, in fact to a true F1 fan, EVERY season is highly anticipated, whats the big fuss, a balding, over rated 41 year old cheat is back in the sport he nearly destroyed with his "team orders" and "contracts forcing team mates to be behind him"..I dont hope he gets a pakslae, i KNOW he gonna get taught a driving lesson, lets just hope he doesnt hurt himself or any of the other drivers if he falls asleep at the wheel for an afternoon nap!!
