Checa recovers to take victory

Phillip Island - World champion Carlos Checa recovered from a crash in race one to storm to victory in the second race in the opening round of the Superbike World Championship here in Australia, on Sunday.

The Althea Ducati Racing rider suffered a fast high-side fall while leading the opening race of the season on lap six and was forced to retire, but came back in race two to top the podium.

It was a day of comebacks as veteran Italian rider Max Biaggi also produced a masterclass on his Aprilia. The Italian was leading the race, but went off track on lap one.

The 40-year-old managed to keep his bike upright, but rejoined at the back of the field. What followed was a superb lesson in overtaking as Biaggi carved his way to second place.

Kawasaki rider Tom Sykes completed the podium after passing Jonathan Rea's Honda on the final lap of the race. BMW Motorrad Motorsport duo Leon Haslam and Marco Melandri made up the top six.

Biaggi won race one earlier in the day, coming in seven seconds ahead of Melandri, with Sylvian Guitoli of Team Effenbert Liberty Racing 0.2 seconds further back.

Kawasaki's Tom Sykes came in fourth after starting on pole, while Jakub Smrz and Michel Fabrizio were classified fifth and sixth respectively.

Biaggi now leads the championship standings on 45 points, with Melandri second on 30.
