Checa completes Imola double

Imola - Carlos Checa made it a perfect day in Italy as he cruised to victory in Race Two of the second round of the World Superbikes Championship here on Sunday.

The veteran Ducati rider won race one ahead of Tom Sykes and enjoyed a similar fate in the second race to take the lead in the world championship standings.

The Spaniard had a tough first half of the race as he was caught up in a battle for second place with Max Biaggi and Leon Haslam. This allowed then race leader Sykes to open up a three-second lead, but Checa nursed his tyres to perfection and caught the Kawasaki rider on lap 15.

Sykes then fell off the pace as he did in the opening race, but still managed to get a second place finish ahead of Haslam and Biaggi in third and fourth respectively.

Irishman Jonathan Rea survived a dramatic slide across the gravel late in the race, but still managed to take fifth place ahead of Eugene Laverty.

The victory moved Checa up to the top of the standings on 75 points, while Aprilia rider Biaggi hovers close behind on 71 points.

Sykes, Leon Haslam, Marco Melandri and Rea completed the top six.
