Van den Heever leads Di-Data

George - Divan van den Heever has now gone 31 holes without a bogey and that put him into a one-stroke lead after the second round on Friday of the R3.5 million Dimension Data Pro-Am being played at Fancourt.

He carded a five-under-par 67 on the Outeniqua course - the tournament is played over a round each on Outeniqua, Montagu - two par-72 courses - and The Links ahead of the cut and the final round on Montagu - to take a one-stroke lead over Oliver Bekker at the halfway point of the tournament.

Despite not dropping a single shot in his second round, the 29-year-old from Pretoria was not entirely happy with things: “I think I played well yesterday,” he said, “and today, I hit a couple of wayward shots and I got lucky.”

And while Outeniqua delivered the leading score of the first round and seven-under, it seemed to play quite a bit tougher in the second round.

“We had a bit of a breeze this afternoon which made it a bit tougher,” said Van den Heever, “but I think the guys who played The Links this afternoon must have had it worse.

Except for Jake Redman, that is. The 24-year-old who plays out of Fancourt carded a five-under-par 68 to climb to seven-under for the tournament and a share of fourth behind Van den Heever, Bekker and Warren Abery who was in third at eight-under.

“We were lucky that the weather played to our advantage and the wind didn’t blow that much. I was good off the tee today and I made some good putts. My iron play was fairly accurate, so all round it was really good today, which I’m really pleased about,” Redman said.

With Redman on fourth was Jean Hugo, who matched that 68 on The Links, and Morne Buys, who carded a two-under 71 there.

Abery seemed to be cruising to the overall lead at The Links, but a double-bogey five on the 17th saw him slip back. “I played solidly and got it to 10-under-par with one more par-five coming home. Making double on 17 hurt a good round. I was concentrating really well and I just hit one really bad shot,” he said.

Bekker, who was flawless in his opening round on Montagu, was less tidy over Outeniqua in his second round, with bogeys on seven and 15 somewhat spoiling the four birdies he worked so hard for.

“I didn’t chip and putt very well,” said Bekker, “and that’s your scoring area, “so I feel I could have been a couple better. I hope the putts drop tomorrow.”

Bekker was nervous about his third round at The Links, but took heart from the fact that Redman turned an 81 last year around to his 68 this year. “That shows it’s doable,” said Bekker. “With The Links, you actually need to know where to go.”

Van den Heever was diplomatic in his assessment of his chances at The Links: “It’s always a good challenge,” he said. “If the weather plays along and there’s no wind, it obviously makes things a bit easier.”
