Ulrich hot on Da Silva's heels

Kathu - Ulrich van den Berg shot a second-round 71 in the Vodacom Origins of Golf event at Sishen Golf Club to hold sole possession of second, one shot behind the lead ahead of the final day in the R540 000 event.

Van den Berg’s second round took his tally to five-under for the tournament, but Brazilian Adilson da Silva’s 67, the best round of the tournament so far, took him a stroke clear of his chaser.

Despite a birdie on the first, gusty winds penalised Van den Berg, who hit only eight fairways during his round. “The wind was whipping around and with a lot of cross-wind tee shots it makes scoring tough,” said Van den Berg, who signed for a 68 in his first round.

He knew to play carefully in tough conditions. “I played conservatively off the tee, used a lot of irons and kept the ball low and out of the wind,” he said.

Van den Berg missed a short putt on the third and carded his first bogey to move back to level-par before playing out his front nine with a string of pars. He birdied straight after the turn and returned to one-under.

The Serengeti Golf Estate professional would bogey the par-three 13th. “When you get on the green and three-putt it’s a bit hard to swallow; it was tough out there,” he said.

Van den Berg birdied the 14th before making par through the rest of his round and signing for his 71.

Da Silva made six birdies and dropped just one shot to card 67 and take his tournament total to six-under 138.

Louis Calitz held station at five-under through much of the afternoon before a late drop on the 16th hole of his round put him back into a share of third with Willie van der Merwe and rookie Allan Versfeld.

Neil Cheetham and Jacques Blaauw both shot four-under for their second rounds and share sixth with Devonde Botes, who carded three-under-par 69 today.
