The 29-year-old German led the tournament from start to finish to bag his second major after the 2010 PGA Championship.
A former world number one, Kaymer struggled badly after winning his first major and at one stage he fell out of the world top 60 as he took on board changes to his swing.
Australia's Adam Scott retained the world number one spot ahead of Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Masters champion Bubba Watson.
The highest ranked South African is Charl Schwartzel, who is ranked at No 24. He slipped down one spot after failing to make the cut at the US Open.
