US Open entry process begins

New York - Applications for the 112th US Open were posted online by the US Golf Association (USGA) on Monday with thousands of players from around the world expected to enter by the April 25 deadline.

The event, to be staged June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, is open to professionals and amateurs with a handicap not above 1.4 under the USGA grading system.

The USGA received 8 300 entries for last year's US Open, down from the record 9 086 for the 2009 event at Bethpage Black near New York.

Local qualifying events will be staged at 109 sites from April 30 through May 17 with sectional qualifiers on May 21 at Shizuoka, Japan; May 28 at Surrey, England, and at 11 US courses on June 4.

Entries are also being accepted for the US Women's Open, to be played July 5-8 at Kohler, Wisconsin, and the US Senior Open for players 50 and older, to be conducted July 12-15 at Lake Orion, Michigan.
