Orlando - The listing for a set of irons that Tiger Woods is purported to have used in winning four consecutive major championships has been removed from eBay, approximately two days after it was posted.
According to the USA Today website, Steve Mata, who submitted the listing for the clubs to eBay, said on Wednesday the listing was taken down after denials that the clubs are authentic.
According to a policy listed on its website, "eBay may remove any listing involving an autographed item if eBay believes that the listing or item may create liability for the buyer, the seller, or any third party."
Woods was asked about the clubs, a set of Titleist irons, during a news conference on Tuesday ahead of The Players Championship.
"I have two sets," Woods said. "I usually switch every eight, nine months, and even to this day I switch every eight or nine months."
He explained he always has multiple sets of irons because he wears out the grooves in them.
When asked whether he still has both sets he used when he won the 2000 US Open through the 2001 Masters, he responded, "Uh-huh."
Mata reiterated his claim that he made the clubs for Woods while working for Titleist. He explained that at the 2001 Buick Classic, a week after Woods's major streak ended at the US Open in Tulsa, Woods gave him the clubs to keep after taking a new set from Mata.
Before it was taken down, Mata said the item got 50 000 hits but no bids at the $250 000 starting offer. He added that he has received e-mails asking about the clubs, and expects to meet with two potential buyers on Thursday.
"I'm sticking by my story," said Mata, who said he's trying to sell the clubs because he has been unemployed for 17 months and needs money for his family.
