Orlando - Tiger Woods apologised on Monday in a Twitter message for spitting on the 12th green during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic, an act which brought a fine from the European Tour.

Tournament director Mike Stewart reviewed the incident, seen worldwide on television and on YouTube, and decided that the former world number one and 14-time major champion had broken the tour code of conduct.

"The Euro Tour is right - it was inconsiderate to spit like that and I know better. Just wasn't thinking and I want to say I'm sorry," Woods wrote in a message posted on the micro-blogging site.

"Everyone was terrific all week, fans especially. Dubai is always a fantastic host. Just wish the week could have ended better."

Woods failed to end a 15-month victory drought, firing a final-round 75 to finish in a share of 20th place, seven strokes behind winner Alvaro Quiros of Spain.

Woods will next try to win his first title since the sex scandal that led to his divorce in two weeks at the World Golf Championships Match-Play Championship.

Is this a big deal? All sportsmen spit sometime or other. It might not be pretty but to make such a huge thing about it is silly. Check the rugby and football players out. they never stop doing it. Don'r hear about too many fines or big deals about them.

How would you like your golf ball to land in a greenie instead of the green? It's different in golf!

So, beacuse most sports people do it, it is condoned???? Wake up and smell the roses. You obviously have no standards. Since when do 2 wrongs make a right???? Get with the programme.

Tiger you are a disgusting man. You serially cheated on your wife, for which you apologised profusely, and now you go and show you disdain for you fellow man by spitting on a golf green. Come to South Africa, you could immediately be employed as a taxi driver, or even as president. What a tosser.

I wish all other sports would bring in a spitting ban. English Premier League soccer players spit more in a game than they do passing or tackling, maybe they are constantly looking for a dry spot on the pitch to spit. Or is it a macho thing. At least golf keeps it's tradition by "nailing" spitters.

Could not agree more. It is like throwing papers out of the car window whilst travelling. Who the hell do these people think they are? Bloody disgrace to say the least.

hey man - spitting is better than to swallow.

      Rolie - 2011-02-15 17:08

      Sayitasitis - 2011-02-20 22:13

Why don' t you guys grow up some time?

  • Rottie - 2011-02-16 10:46

@ Roli, that sounds familiar. Do I know her?

      Rolie - 2011-02-17 07:19

This has been a long timing coming. Tiger is at fault, but so are all the sportsman (note men, not women). It is an absolute disgrace that spitting has not been dealt with before. It is a despicable habit, and which should be banned without further delay. The sad part for me is that we are starting to see it at school level; which is totally unacceptable. How anybody that is in the lime light 24/7 can set such an example is beyond me. It just strengthens my point that you do not necessarily need brains to be a good sports person. A bit of talent, and one can act like an idiot any day of the week.
