Cape Town - Pearl Valley’s South African Open contract expires this year, and a decision on the 2010 venue could be imminent. It is rumoured that Durban Country Club and Humewood Golf Club are the likely candidates.
Sunshine Tour Chief Operating Officer Grant Wilson said on Saturday afternoon: “We are in negotiations involving the other stake-holders regarding next year’s venue, but I am cautiously optimistic that we could have news in the next 24 hours.
“Other than that, I can’t make any comments on the speculation at this stage.”
It is thought unlikely that Pearl Valley will continue to host the event after 2009.
Next year’s edition will be the 100th South African Open, which was first played in 1893 and is the second oldest national open in the world after the Open Championship. Both Durban CC and Humewood have hosted the SA Open on multiple occasions and could be seen as fitting venues for the occasion.
Durban CC and Humewood have seen some of the lowest scoring in SA Open history. Ernie Els’s score of 264 in the 2006 edition (the last time the event was not played at Pearl Valley) remains a championship record, while John Bland’s 62 in the 1993 SA Open at Durban CC is an 18-hole record for the tournament.
