Cape Town - When Trevor Fisher Jnr won the Investec Cup last year it changed his life. This week he returns to defend that title in the hopes of becoming the first back-to-back champion.

Plenty has changed since Fisher’s win back in March 2014 and he returns to the North West Province as a European Tour champion and the leader in the Chase to the Investec Cup.

The 35-year-old knows just how valuable the win can be – last year he walked away with a R3.5-million bonus for his finishing top of the points standings, reports

“That win was huge. There is a quality field every year and I think a bit of extra pressure for us past champions. But my game is feeling good and hopefully we can make something happen this week,” he said.

The Chase to the Investec Cup is based on points awarded at every Sunshine tour event from the Telkom Business PGA Championship until the Tshwane Open. Bigger tournaments, such as the Africa Open that Fisher won a fortnight ago, offer up greater points.

Players who are consistent throughout the season are rewarded well, but so are the players who do especially well at the co-sanctioned tournaments of summer. Only 30 contenders make it to the finale and this year’s field includes Sunshine Tour regulars Danie van Tonder and Ulrich van den Berg along with international competitors Charl Schwartzel and Morten Orum Madsen.

Fisher’s recent win at the Africa Open and good form throughout the summer indicate his readiness to defend at the Investec Cup, but the field is jam-packed with talent and it will be a huge victory for him.

“To win the Investec Cup is big. I didn’t expect to win last year and it has meant so much. It’s strange to look back now, because things are so different, but I hope that some of those good memories come back and I can be in with a chance on Sunday,” he said.
