Johannesburg - The final event of the Sunshine Tour summer season, the Investec Cup, will offer a R2 million bonus for the winner of the season-long points list, the organisers have confirmed.
Following his win at the Telkom PGA Championship at the weekend, Jaco van Zyl is first in the standings, with Darren Fichardt just a few points adrift in second ahead of this week's event.
The 'Chase to Investec Cup' is similar to the 'Race to the Fedex Cup' on the PGA tour, where massive bonuses are available for the winner at the end of the week.
The field for the event, to be played at Millvale Golf Estate, Rustenburg Golf Club and Lost City Golf Course, would comprise the top 30 players available on the points standings, according to Sunshine Tour marketing and communications director Duncan Cruickshank.
“It's a R1 million event - the actual tournament - but then there's a bonus pool as well which is worth R5 million (for the top finishers in the points race),” Cruickshank said on Monday.
“The points in the Investec Cup tournament are double the points on offer from any regular events.
"Potentially, if someone who is lying in fifth place wins the event, he could also win the whole chase to the Investec Cup.”
The field for the event would also comprise amateurs competing for a R100 000 prize for charity.
“The amateurs who will be playing, played in Investec golf days over the last six months, and have qualified to play," Cruickshank said.
“There are obviously a few invites from Investec itself, but at least 24 of those players qualified. In the last round, only the top eight amateurs will be playing.”
