Cape Town - The 30-man field for the 2015 Investec Cup has been finalised, and is headed up by last year’s winner, and the man who took the R3.5-million winner’s share of the R10-million Bonus Pool, Trevor Fisher Jnr.
The tournament takes place at Millvale Private Retreat for the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday, and will be completed on Saturday and Sunday at the Lost City at Sun City reports the sunshinetour.com.
Fisher took the title and the cash last year when he held off a challenge by Jacques Blaauw by a single shot – and Blaauw is the man who is second in the standings behind Fisher this year going into the tournament.
The R1-million tournament is the culmination of a year-long quest for points to get into the elite 30-man field which also competes for the lucrative Bonus Pool. The Chase to the Investec Cup started with the Telkom Business PGA Championship and ends with the Tshwane Open. The top 30 available players on the Chase to the Investec Cup Bonus Pool ranking after the Tshwane Open qualified for the season-ending tournament.
With some players exercising the option not to play despite qualifying – South Africa Open championAndy Sullivan is one example – it has meant some players who thought they may have missed out have made it into the field for a shot at a share of the Bonus Pool.
The player ranked lowest on the points table for the Chase to the Investec Cup is Christiaan Basson, who finished 42nd on that list. Getting into the Invtestec Cup tournament gives him a chance of turning a poor start to his 2015 year on the Sunshine Tour around.
The field includes world number 33 Charl Schwartzel, back home in South Africa to work on his game ahead of the Masters, a major which he won in 2011.
And one of the fairytale stories of the tournament will surely be Wallie Coetsee, who won his second title on the Sunshine Tour after a 17 year-wait last year, and has converted the confidence that brought into an explosive start to the 2015 season simply by wanting to be part of the field which will try to win the lion’s share of the Bonus Pool.
