Johannesburg - The 2011 South African Open Championship will be played from November 17-20, the Sunshine Tour announced.
The event has moved from its recent December date as a result of the congestion on the world-wide golfing calendar with the biennial playing of the World Cup and the Presidents Cup.
Those events pushed out the dates of the European Tour’s season-ending tournaments, and, with the SA Open Championship being a European Tour and Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned event, it needed to move earlier.
The Alfred Dunhill Championship at Mpumalanga’s Leopard Creek has also been moved, and will be played the week after the SA Open from November 24-27.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge remains in its first-weekend-in-December slot, and will be played at Sun City from December 1-4.
“With the Presidents Cup and the World Cup only being played every two years,” said Sunshine Tour Commissioner Gareth Tindall, “it means that the 2012 season will see the SA Open Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Championship move back to their December slots.”
The SA Open Championship will be on the same weekend as the Presidents Cup being played in Melbourne, Australia, while the Alfred Dunhill Championship will be up against the World Cup in Mission Hills, China. The Nedbank Golf Challenge will be up against the UBS Hong Kong Open.
