Sunday slip for Louis in Texas

Cape Town - A final-round blowout by Louis Oosthuizen prevented him from winning the Shell Houston Open, despite the 29-year-old heading into Sunday with a two-stroke lead.

The 2010 Open champion carded a disappointing 75 during the final round and slipped back to third place. While he did not win, it was Oosthuizen’s best result on the PGA Tour this season and took him from 110th to 48th on the PGA Tour money list. He also moved to 27th in the world ranking and looked strong ahead of the Masters this week.

Ernie Els put on a valiant show at Redstone Golf Club as he tried to play his way into the Masters and finished tied 12th at 10-under-par. The result does not push The Big Easy into the top 50 in the World Ranking and he will miss his first Masters tournament in 19 years.

On the other side of the pond, Alex Haindl got off to a flyer when he shot 64 for round one of the Sicilian Open, but faltered over the next two rounds, carding consecutive 74s. He recovered some of the lost ground with a respectable 67 on Sunday and finished the tournament tied for 19th.

It was a tough weekend for South Africans in Italy, with Garth Mulroy the next best in the field behind Haindl. Mulroy, the 2011 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit winner, finished tied 41st at three-under-par.

The Challenge Tour headed for Kenya, where Tyrone Ferreira took a share of third at eight-under-par, leading a throng of South Africans through the tournament.

Justin Walters was also on form at Muthaiga Golf Club and shot 67 on Sunday to finish one stroke back from Ferreira and in a share of fifth.
