Sick Johnson sinks hole-in-one

Sandwich - Dustin Johnson sunk a hole-in-one at the British Open on Thursday but was in no mood to celebrate after being laid low by a mystery illness.

The 27-year-old from South Carolina endured a mixed opening round and was heading to finish well off the pace after reaching the 14th on four-over-par.

Yet Johnson's ace on the par-three 16th, which was sandwiched by birdies on the 15th and 17th, enabled the American to open with a level par 70.

The American revealed afterwards he had been struggling with illness throughout the round at Royal St George's.

"I'm not very excited at all," Johnson said. "I'm going to go home and sleep. I'm not feeling all that well, so a little bit under the weather.

"My glands are all swollen. I've got some kind of infection. I'm on some antibiotics, so hopefully it'll go away."

Johnson is chasing his first Major title at Royal St George's, and is best known for a rules blunder at the US PGA last year which cost him the chance of victory and allowed Martin Kaymer to win.
