Pollock leads the sportsmen

Knysna - Shaun Pollock, playing off a two handicap, carded a three-under 69 for a nett 67 and the first-round lead in the sporting category on day one of the Castle Lite SuperSport Shootout at Simola on Saturday.

The SA cricketing legend carded five birdies and two bogeys - both of which were on par-5s - on a glorious day in Knysna as the players were treated to perfect playing conditions, in sharp contrast to last year's event at Pinnacle Point where the players were tormented by the wind for two days.

The leader overall though is businessman Sam Hackner of Investec, who carded an unbelievable 80 off a 16 handicap for a nett 64 and a three-shot lead.

"I played nicely out there," said SA's leading wicket taker of all time, adding that one of the keys to his round was making a lot of putts.

But what of the drops on the par-5s? "Yeah, that was unusual as I tend to do well on those, just bombing it out there. I hit a duff chip from 30m out on the seventh, then got caught up in the bunkers on 15.

There was, though, a stunning performance of the par-4s, where he found himself four under. "I hit some good approach shots on the 4s, and then managed to hole a few good putts. It also helped that when I did hit some poor shots I tended not to be in too much trouble."

And what of a strategy for round two?

"Oh, there's plenty of time to think about that tomorrow! There's some good soccer and a Sharks game to watch before that."
