Gullane - Already peeved at making three straight bogeys, Charl Schwartzel's patience snapped at the British Open when he skewed a shot out of heavy rough on the 15th hole.

His club snapped, too.

The 2011 Masters champion threw his iron to the ground with both hands and the shaft broke in half.

Schwartzel says "it is what this championship does to you."

The South African said he "didn't take into account the ground was so hard," adding "I've not done that sort of thing too many times but it's never resulted in a club breaking."

Schwartzel made double-bogey on No. 15 but holed a bunker shot at the last for a 4-over 75.
