London - European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie revealed on Friday he has been suffering marriage difficulties after newspaper claims that he had been seeing a former girlfriend.
The eight-time European number one had confessed to his wife of two years, Gaynor Knowles, about a secret affair with an ex-lover, Joanne Baldwin, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
The newspaper claimed the affair is over and Montgomerie is now trying to save his marriage.
Montgomerie, 46, issued a statement on Friday which read: "I have put my marriage under considerable strain but we are working through these problems.
"I am very sorry for the hurt I have caused to the ones I love so much. I would ask that my family and I are given the space and privacy to continue trying to resolve the issues."
The Scot's 14-year first marriage ended in divorce in 2004 and Baldwin met Montgomerie on the school run after his divorce.
The golfer then met Knowles and married her on the banks of Loch Lomond in April 2008.
The couple moved to Montgomerie's home country to set up home in Perthshire and have seven children - Montgomerie had two daughters and a son with first wife Eimear.
He is playing in the Wales Open this week at Celtic Manor, near Newport, where he will lead Europe's attempt to win back the Ryder Cup from the US later this year.
