Matteson sets pace at Viking

New York - American Troy Matteson held the clubhouse lead when play was finally abandoned for the day in the weather-disrupted second round of the Viking Classic in Madison, Mississippi on Friday.

Matteson birdied his last three holes for a six-under-par 66 and a 12-under total of 132 at a soggy Annandale Golf Club where preferred lies were again permitted on the fairways.

Also at 12 under was compatriot George McNeill, who was 25 yards from the flagstick in two shots at the par-five last when the siren sounded to halt the action for the day.

Tom Pernice junior carded a 67 to finish at 11-under, a stroke better than fellow Americans Blake Adams (62), Bobby Gates (69) and Chris Kirk (67).

Only 34 players in the field of 122 completed the second round on Friday. Of the six players tied for the overnight lead, Australian Peter Lonard and South Korean Kang Sung-hoon were yet to tee off in round two.

The second round was initially delayed two hours because of heavy overnight rain and Matteson was delighted to complete his 18 holes after play was suspended for a further four hours in the afternoon.

"It was a weird round because with the delay we started late and I got off to a little bit of a slow start," the 31-year-old, a double winner on the PGA Tour, told reporters.

"I was only one under there for a long time but got to the back nine and finally started making some putts.

"The break probably came at a good time," Matteson said of the lengthy interruption in the afternoon due to torrential rain and the threat of lightning. "And then I got back out there and birdied the last three."

Adams, bidding for his first PGA Tour title at the age of 35, posted the lowest round of the week with a nine-birdie 62.

"It was a lot of fun out there," said Adams, who eagled the par-five fifth and recorded his lone bogey at the eighth.

"I gave myself a lot of chances ... all in all, a great day and hope I can keep it going."

Adams had just teed off on his final hole, the par-four ninth, when play was suspended for the next four hours.

"It's a little tough," he said of his long wait. "We always face weather things that you have no control over whatsoever so I just dealt with it how I could.

"I did a few texts, hung out with my wife a little bit, hung out with some friends, told some jokes, talked about fishing. You know, just what all rednecks do, I guess."

The second round is scheduled to resume on Saturday at 7:00 am local time.
