Augusta - Spain's Sergio Garcia won the 81st Masters on Sunday, beating England's Justin Rose with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

The final pair in the last round were deadlocked on 9-under-par 279 after 72 holes.

A look at five key moments over the final round at the Masters:

1. ROSE BIRDIES PAR-5 EIGHTH

Rose fell three strokes behind after five holes Sunday but bounced back to pull even with Garcia thanks to a run of three birdies in a row, the last of them at the par-5 eighth to keep Garcia from grabbing a more decisive edge and momentum early.

2. GARCIA'S RESCUE AT PAR-5 13TH

Garcia began the back nine with two bogeys and sent his tee shot at the par-5 13th - the final hole of dreaded Amen Corner - under a bush.

Taking an unplayable lie, he looked to be in danger of falling well behind Rose. But Garcia took his penalty, blasted into the fairway, salvaged a par and watched Rose miss a short birdie putt to keep him two back.

The deficit had not changed but the momentum had swung.

3. GARCIA EAGLES PAR-5 15TH

This was a miracle shot on a decisive hole for Garcia in the Masters hunt. His second shot hit the pin and bounced near enough for him to sink the eagle putt.

It was the first time a Masters champion had eagled on the back nine of the final round since Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal in 1994.

4. ROSE BOGEY AT PAR-4 17TH

Rose curled in a six-foot birdie putt at the par-3 16th to grab a one-stroke lead over Garcia. But he botched his approach at the par-4 17th, finding a greenside bunker and failing to sink his par putt, a costly bogey that dropped him back into a share of the lead with Garcia.

Both parred the 18th to force a playoff.

5. ROSE HITS WAYWARD PLAYOFF DRIVE

On the playoff hole, the par-4 18th, reigning Olympic champion Rose pushed his tee shot to the right into the trees. The ball bounced out onto pine straw, but tree branches prevented Rose having a clear second shot at the green.

He could only punch the ball onto the fairway and hit the green in three, two putting for a bogey. Garcia hit the green comfortably in two and birdied for victory.
